Ville Hockey Returns Jan. 19th

-Matt Iehle (January 2018)

The Spring Semester is right around the corner and Millersville Ice Hockey looks to start where they left off. Coming off a Fall Semester where we saw Millersville collect 11 wins, Ville Hockey will have 8 more games throughout January and February. The boys kickoff the semester at home vs Georgetown on 1/19 and then hit the road for a CSCHC contest with Rutgers the next day (1/20). Throughout the semester, Ville will also take on CSCHC and in-state rival West Chester and first place Penn. Millersville will also be hosting 3 promotion nights: 1/27- Relay for Life Night, 2/3- Fan Appreciation Night, 2/10- Senior Night. The boys hit the ice for Spring Training camp this Friday 1/12 which will run all week before the Georgetown tilt. Make sure you make it out to LIR to see Ville Hockey play before the season ends!

Ville Looks to Finish Semester Strong

After Thanksgiving break, the Millersville hockey club finds themselves past the midway point in the season and three games shy of ending their fall semester. As usual, Millersville will hit the road in December for the fourth consecutive year, with three games and six points up for grabs. The black and gold have played just four games in the last month of the year dating back to 2014, not including the Zamboni blunder of U-Penn last season. All four games came away from Lancaster Ice Rink, with the team going 2-1-1 in the process. Two of those games were against Monmouth and another with TCNJ, both of which the Marauders will face this time around. The other team will be the Scranton Royals; one of the CSCHC’s newly added teams from a year ago.

Here are the league records for MU against the three teams they’ll face in December over the last three years:
vs TCNJ: 2-4
vs Scranton: 2-0-1*
vs Monmouth: 4-1-1*
*ties

Ville plays TCNJ and Scranton on the first week of December, with their semester finale coming at Jersey Shore Arena against the other MU squad the following weekend. Undoubtedly, the Marauders’ toughest task will come against the TCNJ Lions. After winning the first two matchups with TCNJ, MU has dropped the last four meetings against the 2017 league champions. This will be their first look at the Lions this season, and of the three league opponents, this contest may be the most important in terms of points, with TCNJ chasing the Marauders by a single standings point.
The following night, MU will be challenged by a short night’s sleep and a date with the second place Scranton Royals for a 1:30 matinee puck drop. This will be the first game at Revolution Ice Centre for Millersville Co-Captain, Ben Flocken since he was sidelined with a broken leg last season against the same Royals club. Both captains Flocken and forward and club President, Matt Iehle were forced out of the lineup due to injuries for a bulk of last year, but have come back with a vengeance this season. Iehle leads the team in scoring, eclipsing the 20 point mark in the club’s first 17 games of the year. In the month of December, Iehle has two goals and four points in just a pair of games played in the month. The game against the Royals will be the second and final meeting of the regular season between the two teams. The earlier engagement was a 3-3 tie with both teams earning a point at LIR. The previous three meetings between these two have been electric, including a 9-6 goal explosion a year ago.
Perhaps the Marauders early Christmas present comes at the end of their December stretch, when they tangle with the Monmouth Hawks. Millersville has only lost 1 time to Monmouth in the brief history of the CSCHC. On a number of occasions in the six meetings against the Hawks, MU has won in convincing fashion. Overall, they’ve outscored Monmouth by a differential of 34-13 since 2014. To make matters better for Ville, the Hawks find themselves at the basement of the league, sitting in last with a 2-6-1-2 record. Nothing is a given in hockey, but with history on
Millersville’s side, you hope the success can continue.

After the month wraps up, the Marauders take a break from the ice and get to spend the holidays with both friends and family before they kick off the marathon start to the spring semester, which sees them play their final eight games of the regular season, including five at home. Nothing can be secured or clinched in terms of playoff spots before 2018 comes, but MU rolls into December on a four game win streak. Three December wins would mean six points for the black and gold. It doesn’t clinch a playoff spot, but it sure does bring Millersville much closer to a return to the playoffs.

Double Dubs for Millersville

-TJ Fasnacht (November 2017)

Millersville grabbed two wins this weekend as they defended home ice against the George Washington Colonials in a non-league matchup and on saturday night NJIT came to Lancaster ice rink to take on the Marauders.  Millersville honored Veterans day this weekend as they had ceremonial puck drops from army veterans to preface both games.   Friday’s puck was dropped by US Army veteran Tab Kurtz and Saturday night’s puck was dropped by the grandfather of Millersville’s Cody Leisey, Mr. Jim Leisey.

The Marauders jumped out to a lead on Friday as “El Capitan” Matt Iehle slid one past the George Washington goaltender with 17 Seconds remaining in the first stanza.  Kyle Milosek extended the Marauders lead in the second period of Friday night’s festivities.  MIlosek made it 2-0 for Millersville, but minutes later the Colonials got one between the wickets of Millersville goaltender Mathieu Schroeder to make it 2-1.  Nick Capasso had other ideas however as he answered quickly for the Marauders making it 3-1.  Capasso’s goal was answered quickly as GWU came back with their own goal to make it 3-2.  Before the middle period would end George Washington would knot things up at 3 a piece to create a tense third period filled with action.  The Colonials took a penalty in the third period to give the Marauders a great opportunity on the powerplay, however the puck just would not find it’s way to the twine as the Marauders could not capitalize.  They took a penalty of their own in the third however a great team effort and some great goaltending by Schroeder held off the attack of the Colonials.  Sixty minutes was not enough in this one as an extra period was needed,  fortunately for the Marauders the captain would again come in clutch on a breakaway and snipe one past the GWU goaltender giving Millersville the 4-3 win in overtime.  This win was historic for the Marauders as it was the first time in four years that Millersville got a win in overtime.  James Mcnally was the last Marauder to give them a win in overtime almost half a decade ago.  This win for Millersville was not just one singular player as it took a team effort to get passed the very tough Colonials team out of the ACCHL.  This win also marked a milestone for goaltender Mathieu Schroeder as he picked up his first ever collegiate win.

Saturday night the New Jersey Institute of Technology Highlanders came to the Lancaster ice rink for the back half of Military weekend.  This matchup had some heavy implications as two points were on the line in this CSCHC contest.  Cody Leisey opened the floodgates early in the first as he went short side on the NJIT netminder.  Leisey’s goal had a little extra meaning as his grandfather was on hand as he got to drop the puck for the Military weekend ceremony.  Iehle would add another one to make it 2-0 to start the second period.  NJIT climbed within one early in the second as they got one past veteran netminder Jeff Pelkowski.  Dalton Bideau would spark another goal spree by the Marauders as he made it 3-1 and then following in his footsteps was number 91 Mitch Ferguson who at the time of writing is now on a 9 game point streak.  The barrage by the Marauders was relentless as they added yet another one.  This one was by number 16 Nick Capasso.  He extended the Marauders lead to four goals and that’s how the second period would end.  Millersville took a penalty and NJIT capitalized on the chance as they made it 5-2 early in the third.  Within thirty seconds NJIT slid another one past Pelkowski to make it 5-3 and give the Marauders a potential late game scare.  The highlanders took a late game penalty and capitalizing on the chance was none other than the ever present Matt Iehle as he scored his fourth of the weekend to make it 6-3 and the Marauders would hang on for the win in this one.  This game was a lot more than just an offensive clinic by Millersville as they controlled both ends of the ice as the hustle was on display.  Troy Potts and many other Marauders played a very physical game that wore down the NJIT Highlanders.  Potts, Connor Derricks and the rest of the defensive core had a great game as they got in front of shots and protected Pelkowski.  Pelkowski also had a fantastic game as he staved off a tough NJIT attack in the latter stages of the game.

The Marauders would like to thank everyone for their continued support as the season rolls on.  A big shoutout goes to Mr. Tab Kurtz and Mr. JIm Leisey for their service.  The Marauders would also like to thank all veterans past and present for their service to our great nation.
See you at the rink!

Roller Coaster Weekend

-Mike Wisienski (November 2017)

This past weekend for the Marauders started out at the Richard Codey Arena to play the Seton Hall Pirates. Seton Hall was sitting in third place and the Marauders were back in seventh. Last year Seton Hall finished in last place in the league with only one win under their belt that came over Millersville by a score of 4-3. The Marauders were looking to continue their point streak as they have not lost in regulation since September 22nd game against St. Joe’s. Seton Hall has surely improved from last season, as they were 4-5 going into the game and looking to break even.

Millersville was 1-0-2-1 and was trying to make their way up the standings. Seton Hall’s Charlie Mule would capitalize on the man advantage giving them the first goal of the game and already making Millersville aware of how much they’ve improved this season. Late in the first though, it was the red-hot Mitch Ferguson who scored on a power play for the Marauders to tie it back up before the first twenty minutes were over. This also extended his point streak to seven games, dating all the way back to the game against Army on September 29th. The second period mirrored the first as the Pirates found the back of the net just two minutes into the period, thanks to Ben Bala. There would not be another goal until just twenty-eight seconds were left on the clock when Millersville’s very own Matt Iehle beat their netminder to tie the game again at 2-2. In the third period Millersville looked to be the more dominant as Mitch Ferguson scored his second of the night. Seton Hall pressed Millersville hard within the later stages of the period, they even pulled their goalie to give them six men and try to tie the game and force overtime. Luckily though Nick Capasso was able to clear the puck from Millersville’s end and carry up to the neutral zone where he then scored on the empty net. The final was 4-2 Ville as that win now put them into fourth place, just one point behind Seton Hall in third. Jeff Pelkowski said he saw 52 shots and saved 50 giving him a much-deserved win and a 3-1-2 overall record.

Less than twenty-four hours later Millersville was back in action against last place Monmouth. Monmouth has never beaten Millersville and was looking to climb out of last place in the league. Millersville was looking to grab their second straight win since the last weekend of September. The Marauders looked good in the first as Tyler Browne scored on a 4v4. At the end of the first the Marauders put up 16 shots and only allowed 5. The second period was very eventful as Nick Krasniqi scored on the power play giving him his first of the season. Monmouth kept the momentum going with their assistant captain Anthony DeFede scoring on another power play. The Marauders were down for the first time in the game but Matt Iehle would not let them go into the locker room still trailing as he scored on a 5v3 power play. Giving him back to back goals for the weekend. At the end of the second Millersville was up in shots 33 to 17 and looking to regain control of the game when the third period started. The third period was a back and forth twenty minutes. The physicality came from both sides and resulted in a multitude of penalties going each way. Regardless, Nick Krasniqi sent an unexpected backhand shot onto Hayden Folfas that beat him just over his shoulder and went top shelf. It was an impressive goal from a player whose only two goals on the season came in that game. With just under five minutes left, Millersville was scrambling to answer back as they did not want to lose to last place Monmouth and get handed their first regulation loss. Unfortunately, they were unsuccessful in doing so and received their first lost in regulation in the league. This also marked the freshman Hayden Folfas’s first college career loss. Not only that, the netminder for the Monmouth Hawks was 0-5 going into that game and saw 41 shots but most importantly saved 39 of them. He stood on his head and looked like a goal tender that would have a winning record. Hayden said he saw 25 shots and saved 22. He was unlucky on the last goal but in my opinion, it was a well-placed shot and I do not think Hayden was expecting Krasniqi to attempt to score on his shot. This was also the first time Millersville has ever lost to Monmouth in over ten years. Millersville is still tied with West Chester and Princeton for fourth in the standings.

Millersville’s next games will be home ones as it will be Military weekend at LIR as the Marauders hosts a non-league game against George Washington University and then a league game against NJIT. I think Millersville should be glad to have that league game because it allows them to play their heart out without worrying about dropping in the standings if they lose. Also, it gives players that were out this past weekend more time to recover because win or lose on Friday they might still be in the same position. Hopefully everyone will be ready to go for the NJIT game, as they sit just one point behind Millersville and that will for sure be a crucial game for the Marauders if they want to try to get into the top three.

Millersville hangs with the best of CSCHC in biggest weekend of the season

- Andrew Mossbrooks (October 2017)

Seven goals and solid goaltending in two big games earned the Marauders three out of a possible four points in the standings to wrap up the month of October. With a win over U-Penn and a tie against Scranton, Millersville has earned points in each of their four CSCHC league games so far this season.

After a two week absence from playing games, Millersville returned to the ice for Halloween weekend and were forced to play against the brass of the CSCHC, drawing the undefeated U-Penn Quakers and the second place Scranton Royals in their biggest weekend of the season.

U-Penn skated into Friday’s game 8-0 through league play thus far, leading the league by far. Their 70 plus goals have them way ahead for first in that category too, but it would be Millersville that would strike first. A bouncing puck was put on the Quakers net and getting a piece of it was Cody Leisey, earning himself the first tally of the night. Penn would retaliate quick and then some, beating Hayden Folfas twice, including a late first period goal with just 11 seconds left. Despite a discouraging goal, Millersville would come out into the second firing on all cylinders and would be rewarded after Matt Iehle fed fellow Captain Ben Flocken for a ripper past Quakers netminder, Jordon Fromm, to send the game into the third tied. Millersville would then get contributions from Noah McQuillan and Nick Capasso to give the visitors in Philadelphia the first multi-goal lead of the game. The Quakers would pull their goalie and press the Marauders, but shut down defense and the pads of Folfas would be enough to hold the fort down and earn their first CSCHC win this season, while handing U-Penn their first loss in league play for the 17-18 campaign.

The game against U-Penn would have a playoff like atmosphere, being one of the most entertaining games of the season by far. Despite the big win for Ville, they would be quick to hop on a bus and get back home with another big contest less than 24 hours later at home.
Saturday would come and so would the Scranton Royals. This gave Millersville Captain and Senior, Ben Flocken his first chance to play against the team that cost him his season last year via an injury sustained last November. Millersville found ways to get pucks on net against Scranton last season, and that trend continued in their first game against the black & purple this season, firing 48 shots on net. Through the first, each team buried a goal to leave it tied after one. For the black & gold, it was rookie Mitch Ferguson tapping home his fifth of the year and continuing to be a terrific player on the third line, providing depth in scoring for the Marauders. The Royals would be suffocated in the second period, registering just three shots in the second, while MU continued to apply the pressure and at the midway point of the period, they broke through. Reliable defender Connor Dericks would get all of a shot from the point for his first of the season. Dericks was able to show flashes of a sniper on a big bomb off a pass from Capasso to make it 2-1 Ville after 40 minutes of play. The Royals looked lost in the second, but would come back with a strong third period performance, including a goal just over a minute into the period, followed by a goal less than 7 minutes later to take the lead. With the Royals up, MU would have to search for energy reserves late into the second game of a back to back. Those reserves were tapped into by another rookie in gold, with Jack Dreisbach knotting the contest at 3-3. Afterwards, both teams would exchange scoring chances, but ultimately 60 minutes would not be enough, putting Millersville into overtime for the fourth time this season. The 4-on-4 session provided several opportunities for Millersville to put it away, but the netminding of Dylan Euvino was enough to shut the door permanently, forcing Millersville to settle for just a point and another tie game in front of the home crowd at Lancaster Ice Rink. The Marauders go 1-0-1-0 on the weekend, earning three out of a possible four points.

This by all means was a measuring stick weekend for the Ville ice hockey club. They played the top two teams in the league leading up to the games and battled them hard. They ended the streak of U-Penn at eight wins and didn’t allow Scranton to take the extra point back to Wilkes-barre. Any team will take three out of four on a weekend, and MU has been able to earn points in all of their games through league play so far. Hayden Folfas got the start in net for both games and remains undefeated in his ACHA career. Matt Iehle continues his point dominance and leads the team with 13 through the first 11 contests this year. Mitch Ferguson leads all Marauders rookies in points with 11 through the first 10 games also.
Health check: Troy Potts and Joe Dooner sat out the weekend. Dooner is expected to be out for a little longer, while Potts was out with back soreness and could be ready to return for the start of November.

Up next: Millersville kicks off November playing their fifth and sixth consecutive league games on the road against Seton Hall Friday, followed by Monmouth paying a visit to LIR Saturday evening. The Marauders have played excellent at Richard Codey Arena in their previous three visits, but the Pirates are a better team than the last few years, so this could be a difficult game. MU has went 5-0-1-0, winning three straight against Monmouth dating back to 2014, and the Hawks have been off to a rough start, so the Marauders will look to capitalize on that, along with continuing to be successful in New Jersey at SHU in their efforts to earn four out of four points this weekend.
Come out and see your Marauders hockey club play in exciting division II action! If unable, don’t forget to catch both games with the radio call live on Ustream.tv, the home of Marauder Hockey!

MU Splits 2 Points with West Chester on Homecoming

- Andrew Mossbrooks (October 2017)

On one of the loudest nights in recent history at Lancaster Ice Rink, the Millersville Marauders hosted their 2017 Homecoming game against the West Chester Golden Rams, where the teams tied 3-3 after 65 minutes of play. The Golden Rams and Marauders each earned a point in the CSCHC standings in what was nothing short of a terrific contest to entertain the crowd.

Millersville was all over the Golden Rams in the opening few minutes of play. The last meeting between these clubs at LIR was last year’s homecoming, when the Marauders stiff armed WCU in a 5-0 win. The way things started, it looked like a similar performance was in store, as Nick Capasso buried one inside the 5 minute mark on West Chester goaltender, Jordan Lorah. The last half of the first seemed to balance out, and the Golden Rams made sure of it once the 2nd period began, as they beat Jeff Pelkowski just 11 seconds into the frame. Fortunately for the MU fans, the even score lasted just 2:54, as Troy Potts rocketed one into the net, courtesy of Matt Iehle, who would later add to the team’s lead with a goal of his own to make it 3-1 Ville. Iehle’s 10 points on the season are atop the team lead in points for Millersville thus far.

With a 3-1 lead headed into the 3rd, things got dicey for the home team, with MU taking 4 penalties and being shorthanded throughout the period, including when the game tying goal was scored with over a minute left to play. The calls were questionable, but not able to be overturned. As a result, overtime we went, marking the 3rd contest Millersville would need more than 60 minutes to finish this season alone. Just 9 games into the campaign, Millersville has played more overtime periods than any of their previous 3 seasons since joining the CSCHC. The league is showing early on this year that the parity of it is making this conference tough to compete in. During the 5 minute 4 on 4 overtime session, both teams did what they could to secure a win, but Jordan Lorah and Jeff Pelkowski were the stars of the night, with each making some big saves and giving their teams a chance to win. Lorah’s performance was exceptional in the first period alone. Had it been any other goalie in net, it’s possible the Marauders would’ve been up 3-0 before the first intermission. They passed the puck well and generated a plethora of offensive zone time with quality scoring chances. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to secure the extra point, and so both teams received a tally in the point’s column, ending the game in a tie.

On a positive note, a point is still a point, and a valuable one at that. This season might just be the toughest season yet in terms of the variety of skill level from team to team in the Colonial State Conference, but Millersville has assembled what looks to be one of their best teams in years. Jeff Pelkowski finished the night with 33 saves, giving him a save percentage of .900 or above in 4 of his first 6 starts this season. MU also has the advantage of having several games in hand with some teams ahead of them in the standings. They have played just 2 league games and have earned a point in each, while some other teams have played 5 or 6 games already.

Quick hits
The homecoming game featured lots of physicality between these 2 league rivals, as the hits and body contact were witnessed throughout the contest. Early in the game, Chris King left with what appeared to be a lower body injury, as did Joe Dooner, who required assistance getting off the ice. David Andrew took a puck to the arm in the 3rd and was seen icing it following the game. Every player on this team plays their role and these young men have been instrumental in helping the team get off to their best start in the last decade, so one would hope for the best and that the time off between games can help.

Coming up…
Millersville will continue practicing, but they don’t hit the ice for a game again until October 27th, when they take a trip down I-76 to visit the city of brotherly love, where they will faceoff with the U-Penn Quakers, who are off to a dominant start to their season. U-Penn last played Millersville in the Marauders final game of the season last year, where they left the fans heartbroken after taking a 4-2 decision over the guys in gold. Ville will be out to seek redemption and hand the Quakers their first loss of the season, with puck drop coming at the Class of 1923 Arena, scheduled for 7:15pm. Catch the game in person by making the travel to beautiful Philadelphia, or catch the game live on Ustream!

Historic Weekend

- Mike Wisienski (October 2017)

Alumni Weekend started off with Millersville going head to head against Army on Friday. This also marked the final weekend of Millersville’s long September homestead. In the first period the physical play from both teams showed, as neither team wanted to give the other an edge. Although the physical play was going back and forth one thing that was not was the scoring. As Millersville struck first thanks to #91 Mitch Ferguson.

Army’s #2 Joe Kolet would later answer for his club tying the game at 1-1. The Marauders did not let the goal from Army sink in to long as #16 Nick Capasso would found the back of the net on the power play. Millersville would not let their momentum go away as #33 Noah McQuillan would get his first goal of the season giving the Marauders a 3-1 at the end of the first period. The second period was played very tight by both ways until #21 Dave Andrews let one go from just below the blue line in Army’s zone which beat their goaltender and gave Ville a 4-1 lead going into the final period of the game. When the last twenty minutes of play started Army looked to be more aggressive it seemed as if they finally found some rhythm on the ice. While Millersville was on the power play #26 Matt Riehl of Army scored shorthanded pulling them within two of Millersville. Before the end of the game though #13 Troy Potts scored to seal the deal for the Marauders giving them their first win against Army since the 2015-2016 season when they split opening weekend. The win against Army also marked Jeff’s first win on the season as he only let in two goals on twenty-nine shots. Finally, it gave them a positive record with 3-2-0-1 all those games coming against non-league opponents.

Last night’s game against NC State was one to remember for the Marauders as they took it to the Wolfpack from start to finish. On paper NC State has an impressive resume but that did not stop the Marauders from letting them know who’s house they were in. Going into yesterday’s game Millersville was looking to get their second straight win along with their fourth win in September which has not happened in over ten years. NC State though was looking to increase their perfect record as they were 1-0 going into Saturday’s contest. The Wolfpack have been around since the 1970’s and have seven ACC titles which is the most in the entire league. Even with all the accolades they have they were no match for the Marauders. In the first period #42 Cody Leisey took advantage of a Marauder power play as he scored his first goal of the season. NC State came back with their own scoring to tie it at 1-1. Right before time expired though in the first on a five on three power play that favored the Marauders it was #13 Troy Potts that scored with no time left on the clock giving him a two-game scoring streak. The Marauders had a 2-1 lead to start the second period. In the second #16 Nick Capasso would beat the Wolfpack netminder through his five-hole making it a 3-1 lead for the Ville. This was also Capasso’s second straight game with a goal. Later in the second as the play on the ice became even more physical Ville took a penalty in which NC State would later make them regret as they scored on it to only put them down by one. It was only shortly after that #15 Chris King found the back of the net to give the Marauders their two-goal lead again. The third period did not disappoint fans at Lancaster Ice Rink as #11 Austin Baty continued the onslaught of goals by getting his first goal of his senior year and the Marauders found themselves up 5-2. NC State tried to get back in the game by scoring a wrist shot that had just beat Jeff glove side. This was to no avail as none other than the team’s very own president #10 Matt Iehle scored to make it a 6-3 game which would turn out to be the final. Giving the Marauders an unprecedented 4-2-0-1 record before even facing a league opponent. Jeff stood on his head during both games this past weekend winning in back to back fashion. He also owes a lot of thanks to his incredible defense that would not be afraid to sacrifice their bodies to block shots.

From top to bottom the Marauders played their best weekend of hockey I have seen in a long time. This team looks to be on a roll and I am not sure who can stop them as they now have a two-game win streak putting up eleven goals and allowing only five in those two games. Millersville starts their league action this Friday against Princeton who has already played three league games resulting in a 1-1-0-1 record. It will also be the Marauders first road trip this season as puck drop is scheduled for 8pm at the Hobey Baker Arena. Well the wait is almost over for the Marauders as they are now able to get into league play this coming Friday and after an impressive and historic September the only way this team can go is up.

10 Takeaways from the first 2 weeks of Marauder Hockey

- Andrew Mossbrooks (September 2017)

Millersville Ice Hockey continued the clubs’ 7 game home stretch in September with 2 non-league contests against The Delaware Fightin’ Blue Hens and the Navy Midshipmen. Like opening weekend, MU split the pair of games, making their record 2-1-0-1 heading into their matchup with St. Joe’s on the 22nd. Here are 10 takeaways from this past weekend:
1. The Hens are good: There’s no way of sugarcoating it; Delaware has been one of the more impressive club teams Millersville has faced over my 4 years of covering this team. They continued their success over the Marauders Friday, making them 6-0 against the black & gold over the last 4 seasons. The score didn’t indicate the true battle this game was, but you have to tip your cap off to U-Dell and the depth of their program.
2. The Rookies have arrived: Each year, it seems there is a new player for Millersville that captures the eye of the fans and becomes an instant impact player. Guys like Matt Iehle, Kyle Milosek and Chris King come to mind. This year, it’s hard to pick one over the other. In the first 4 games of the season, Jack Dreisbach, Bryan McGillin, and Mitch Ferguson all have scored their first goal as a Marauder. New netminder, Hayden Folfas has also shined, winning both of his first starts in his career with the Marauders. It takes depth to win hockey games, and Millersville’s new rookie class has certainly showcased this team’s depth and is already making some noise in conversation’s regarding Ville hockey.
3. Offensive Juggernauts: If there’s one bonafide strength to this Marauder hockey club early on, it is their offense. This team already has 20 goals on the season. Last year through 4 games, Millersville had just 7 goals and didn’t hit the 20 goal mark until their 7th game of the year on October 14th. The defense is also a part of the scoring threat that Millersville imposes on the opposition. 16 players already have at least a point on this team. It may be early, but at this rate the Marauders will be an exciting team to watch on the scoresheet, as they seem to have no end in sight to piling up points.
4. 2nd Period team: Thus far, Millersville has done the majority of their damage on other teams in the middle period, scoring 11 of the team’s 20 goals in that frame. MU is actually on a 3 game streak in which they have scored 3 goals against their opponents in the second period.
5. PK problems: In hockey, there is good and bad. Millersville is no different, and while the club has been rather impressive early on, their penalty kill may need some work. Through the first 2 weeks, MU has let in an astonishing 9 goals while being shorthanded. Part of their penalty killing solution could also be just to stay out of the box. Millersville has already amassed over 70 minutes in the penalty box and if you take some of those away and take some of the goals that went with them, Millersville might have even had a 3rd win at this point in the year. It’s apparent that teams take penalties and that is part of the game, but the more time you spend killing a penalty is the less time you have to score on the other team.
6. Energy at LIR: There are many rinks Millersville plays in where home ice advantage tends to not factor in. Teams have late night games where almost nobody is there to watch it seems. This is not the case for Lancaster Ice Rink and the fans, friends and families of the players who dawn the gold sweaters. The first weekends at LIR this season have been fantastic, with fans being on top of the play and so involved in the game. They are attentive to the play and they voice their opinions. It’s one of the loudest places to play in the CSCHC and knowing that these are non-league matchups, it gets very exciting to think how the crowd will be come league play and theme nights like homecoming and senior night.
7. Never quitting: It doesn’t seem like the Marauders will be taken out of any game this season. The team just keeps battling and refuses to quit. Both games this weekend featured the Marauders down on 5 separate occasions and they were able to come back and either tie or take the lead in those scenarios. It’s not to say that this team hasn’t pulled this off in year’s past, but there’s something about this team and their attitude that feels different from before. I really do believe this year is going to be something special for this team.
8. Seniors out to prove themselves: There are 8 seniors on this year’s team (3 forwards, 4 defenseman, and 1 Goalie) and for them, it’s their final opportunity to showcase themselves as a Millersville Marauder. The skill of this year’s senior class is up there with the likes of Nick Mullarkey, Read Bohan, Ryan Henderson, etc. Combine this with the infusion of young, first year players and returning, experienced guys and this team really seems to have a perfect balance early on that you hope they can carry throughout the season. 2 of those seniors (Ben Flocken and Matt Iehle) were injured last season for the majority of the campaign and early on, the co-captains have been tearing it up and the rest of their teammates are taking notice, trying to replicate it by going all out, which has made this team fun to watch.
9. Exciting: It’s the word of the season. This team is fun to watch, for all the reasons listed above. The opening game of the year against Temple was my favorite opening game of the year I have called in my 4 seasons with the team. The energy was electric and despite the loss, MU bounced back the following night with a big game against Bloomsburg. They replicated that act this past weekend by bouncing back against Navy and it’s one of those things you just love to see a team be able to do.
10. #10: I’ve mentioned him earlier, but Matt Iehle had a great weekend. His 4 point performance on Saturday gave him the team lead in points with 7, including 3 goals. Iehle’s season was cut short to just 11 games in 2016, but he’s 100% healthy and as goes the Captain, so does the team. He is leading the ship for the Marauders this season and in his senior year, Iehle will do everything and anything to keep that ship from stopping until they have reached the treasure of a CSCHC championship.
**The Millersville Marauders season continues this Friday, September 22nd against the ST. Joe’s Hawks. Puck drop is scheduled for 7pm at Lancaster Ice Rink, or you can join us on the air at Ustream, the home of Marauder hockey!**Millersville Ice Hockey continued the clubs’ 7 game home stretch in September with 2 non-league contests against The Delaware Fightin’ Blue Hens and the Navy Midshipmen.

Opening Weekend Recap

-Mike Wisienski (September 2017)

The Marauders opened their 2017-2018 season with two back to back home games. They started off against a tough D1 Temple team. The Marauders were quick to assert their dominance and let the Owls know who’s house they were in. By the end of the first period Millersville had themselves a lead thanks to a Chris King goal that he deflected from Austin Baty's shot. The Marauders started four new freshman forwards out of the seven they have on their roster. These four-freshman had a significant impact on the game as two of them found the back of the net in the second period. Shortly after Joey Powell of Temple scored a shorthanded goal, Matt Iehle fed a beautiful pass to Jack Dreisbach who put one past Benjamin Auerbach on the power play to give the Marauders a 2-1 lead. Another new star named Mitch Ferguson got his name on the goal sheet by scoring on the power play. Temple would score later in the period on the power play to draw themselves within one. At the start of the third period the Millersville was up 3-2, it was not until 5:30 was left in the third when the game was tied by a Temple owl. The game would remain tied at the end of 60 minutes. Resulting in four on four overtime. This gave both teams a lot of ice to work with as there were multiple breakaways for both clubs. Unfortunately for Millersville, Temple caught Millersville in their own end and made them pay for it by going on a breakaway and beating senior netminder Jeff Pelkowski. Jeff had a stellar senior debut as he saw 44 shots and made 41 saves. The Marauders from top to bottom played as a cohesive unit and even though it was a non-league game the Marauders sure did show improvements from last year and gave everyone watching hopes for a successful season. Millersville brushed off the overtime loss to Temple as just less than 24 hours later they faced off against an even tougher Bloomsburg University.
The second game of the Millersville Marauders 2017-2018 season came against the Bloomsburg Huskies. The Marauders had just lost to the Temple Owls in a very close back and forth game that took four periods to find a winner. Although they had just lost the season opener the Marauders were making sure they were coming out of opening weekend with a win. Bloomsburg though was coming to Lancaster Ice Rink to start their 2017-2018 season. While they had not played the night before and had fresher legs the game would not show that at all. The Marauders took it to the Huskies early in the first period when Ben Flocken scored his first of two goals on the power play by sending a knuckle puck towards the Huskies goalie Gabe LaPegnna which somehow found its way past him putting the Marauders up 1-0. As I stated earlier Flocken was not done yet as he fired home a slapshot beating LaPegnna Giving the Millersville a 2-0 advantage at the end of the first. Going into the second period the physical play did not let up as both teams were finishing every check. These big hits led to many scrums and penalties throughout the rest of the game. Also in the second period, the Marauders scored three times. Twice by Chris King giving him three goals in two games to start his Sophomore year. There was a goal scored on the power play by the Huskies giving them their first goal of the game but they still trailed 4-1. Late in the second period Joe Dooner beats the Huskies netminder to give the Marauders a huge 5-1 lead at the end of the second period. The third period is when the Huskies picked up their physical play along with increasing their shots as they beat freshman goaltender Hayden Folfas twice to draw the score within two. Luckily for the Marauders those would be the only goals they let in during the third period to get their first win on the season and their first non-league win as well. Hayden Folfas was a key reason the Marauders skated away with the 5-3 win, he saw roughly 30 shots and looked very impressive in his collegiate hockey debut. I expect to see him and Jeff a lot this year battling for the starting role. There are many positives the team took away from opening weekend as they gave everyone watching high hopes for the remainder of the season. Next week the Marauders are back in action against Delaware and Navy at Lancaster Ice Rink. After how this weekend played out you will not want to miss those next two games for Millersville.

Setting Sail: Talking Points Going Into the 2017-18 Season

- Andrew Mossbrooks (September 2017)

After a long summer, The Marauders get set to return to the ice in September for another exciting season of Millersville ice hockey, as MU resumes their search for their 1st championship in the CSCHC. Before puck drop, here are some things to keep in mind for the upcoming season:
1. The facts
The Marauders play a 28 game season for the second consecutive year. Last season, Millersville finished with an overall mark of 11-14-1-2 and a league record of 9-8-1-2, losing their last two games in regulation to be bounced from playoff contention. The black and gold have an identical setup to last year, with 18 league games and 11 non-league games, featuring some new opponents such as Temple, Bloomsburg, and George Washington University.
2. Home sweet home?
Millersville finished 6-8-1 in their 2016-17 campaign at Lancaster Ice Rink. The black and gold will play in front of their fans at the LIR 18 times this season, with their 10 road games being all league contested other than one (Delaware). The Marauders will spend the most time at home right away, as they open up this year with an entire month of home games in September, which includes seven games, all coming in non-league fashion. Despite the comfort of getting to wake up and be a 20 minute drive from the rink, Millersville won’t find any favors on the schedule, as they kick off the season against Temple’s D1 squad, then follow the next day against last year’s 13-3-1 Bloomsburg Huskies. Temple has had better days, or years I should say. Over the last two seasons, the Owls have fallen far short of being a .500 team, including last season’s 7-27 blunder. Despite that record looking favorable for the Marauders, the quality of opponents has to be factored in to coincide with Temple’s record. MU also plays Army and Delaware in September, which are two teams that have had the better of the Marauders over the last couple of seasons. September will certainly be a month filled with stiff competition for Millersville to kick off their season with.
3. Health check
Last season, both captains Matt Iehle and Ben Flocken sustained injuries that saw them miss the bulk of their season. Iehle missed the beginning of the season and didn’t play a game until January, while Flocken suffered a serious leg injury against Scranton in November, putting him out the rest of the year. Coupled with injuries and other issues on the team, the Marauders were in a dog fight the entire year. As it stands, the team looks fully healthy entering the first week of the season. If they can remain that way, expect a noticeable difference on the ice from last season.
4. New kids on the block
Speaking of noticeable differences, with the departure of several players such as Josh Feehan and Marc Daouphars, the Marauder hockey club was forced to look for new pieces to what they hope solves a championship puzzle. This year’s squad features nine new players, consisting of seven forwards and two goalies. Roster turnover happens in the off season for almost any hockey team, and collegiate hockey faces perhaps the most frequent turnover. With nine new players, there will be a lot of weight that will need to be carried for this new future core of the Marauders. With the return of Millersville hockey veteran Jeff Pelkowski, expect to see a three goalie tandem that will look to compete for a starting job in net that is certainly left open after the departure from Millersville graduate, Marc Daouphars, who was the Millersville starting goaltender the previous three seasons. Last year, Coach Duffey elected to play the hot hand frequently, resulting in Daouphars getting several consecutive starts. Each netminder should have the chance to show the coaching staff what they can do in the opening month, so it will be interesting to see what happens in between the pipes this season.
5. A promising year
Millersville was shorted of a playoff berth last season, but over the course of the three year existence of the Colonial State Conference (CSCHC), they have been one of the better, more consistent teams. With a new group of players, the return of healthy players that play a big part on this team, there’s no reason to doubt the Millersville Marauders can return to the postseason in 2018. The skill is there and when healthy, the consistency is too. Adjustments will be made throughout the season, but no team is free of those during the year. While there are nine new players, there are also eight seniors playing in what will be their final season with the black and gold. A balance of experience is shown and it is expected to see the playing levels of those seniors go up, as it always tends to with guys in their final year. There is reason to be optimistic. There is reason to be excited. There is reason to believe that Millersville can bring some hardware home in February, but it all starts with a journey. That journey begins September 8th, as the Marauders season sets sail!

Recap: January 2017

- Andrew Mossbrooks (February 2017)

Following a month long winter break, the Marauder hockey club began the final stretch run towards the CSCHC playoffs with a brief, 4 game schedule in the month of January. This month would be crucial, as Millersville’s 4 games were all slated against league opponents. It would be fair to say that January could’ve been a make or break month for the Marauders season and playoff chances. Fortunately for them, it was the former.
The black & gold head into the final month of the regular season having won 3 straight and earned 7 out of a possible 8 points in the CSCHC standings in January. Their last game in January, they defeated the NJIT Highlanders by a score of 4-1, officially clinching the Marauders a playoff berth in the process. MU has now qualified for the CSCHC postseason in all 3 years of the league’s existence. Where they finish in the top 6 is a question that still remains. Millersville has 5 regular season games left, but only 2 of which are league contests. (TCNJ & U-Penn). Interestingly enough, those 2 teams are 2 of the 3 teams in front of the Marauders in the standings headed into February. These teams have all played 16 league games so far, so with each team still having an opportunity to grab 4 points, the standings are far from confirmed. Princeton is still sitting atop the standings with 26 points. They have a single game remaining within league play, so based on that outcome, in combination with TCNJ & U-Penn’s games, there is still a chance the Tigers won’t lock up the top seed. Unfortunately, Millersville has been mathematically eliminated from the conversation of finishing in first, although there is still a very good chance they could lock up the 2nd seed, which would give them a bye for the first round of games.
How they got here
Millersville locked up a playoff spot because of their well-rounded team effort. Both Marc Daouphars and Jeff Pelkowski held the net well in their respective starts in January. It seems Daouphars is the clear #1 in the crease, but Pelkowski certainly has him covered if need be and can provide good goaltending in-between the pipes. The Marauders also were led by veterans, specifically #19 James McNally, who scored 3 goals in the 4 league games in January. Overall he had 6 points in those contests, having him tied for the team lead in points with 25 on the season. Another reason this team has been playing so well is because of their scoring depth. Who would’ve thought that the player McNally would be competing with for team lead in points would be freshman Bobby Tibbs? The freshman out of Maryland struggled early in the season but since scoring his first ACHA goal against West Chester at homecoming, this kid has been electric. Tibbs had a 7 game point streak snapped against NJIT last week, but saying that alone should tell you just how valuable he is to this team. The Marauders have 8 players in double digits with points this season. 4 of those players have at least 20 points. (McNally, Tibbs, King & Milosek). To put that into perspective, Princeton is 1st overall in the league as it stands and they have only 3 players in the 20 point club.
Looking ahead
We have officially hit the final month of Millersville hockey in the 2016-17 season. The Marauders have 5 games in the final 2 weekends of the regular season, with a possible 4 points that can still be earned in the standings. Playoffs occur the following weekend on February 17-19th at Loucks Ice Rink. The Marauders are happy to have made the playoffs in the CSCHC for a third consecutive year, but they know that they’re looking for more than just a playoff berth. The last 2 seasons, MU was knocked out in the 1st & 2nd round respectively. This year they hope to make it one round deeper and with a W next to their name. Time will tell, but one thing is for certain: the march to the CSCHC playoffs has begun.

Alumni Game Set

We are pleased to announce that our annual alumni game will take place on Saturday, March 25th at Lancaster Ice Rink. The alumni game is a great way for players to reconnect with old teammates and friends and to enjoy the day back on the ice in a Millersville uniform. We are hoping for a great turnout and hope to see many of our alumni there. If you plan on attending, please email Club President, Matt Iehle, at villehockeypres@gmail.com to reserve your spot. Please tell all of your teammates and we hope to see all of our alumni there!
Also, we have created a Facebook page to reconnect our alumni and keep them up to date with the current Millersville team. It is called Millersville Ice Hockey Alumni. Please feel free to join and tell any other alumni about the page.

19 Down, 10 to Go

- Andrew Mossbrooks (December 2016)

The fall 2016 semester at Millersville University is officially in the books. Students will return home, having earned a well rest which will take place over the course of the next 5 weeks. The Marauders hockey club ended the fall semester in rather unusual fashion. Following the first period of play in which MU trailed 1-0 on the road against U-Penn, a Zamboni malfunction on the ice caused the game to be postponed and so the players hopped on the bus back to Millersville after playing just a 20 minute hockey game. An update regarding the rescheduled date of the game is expected in the coming weeks. Including that game, Millersville is set to play its final 10 games of the regular season in marathon style. There will not be a weekend where the Marauders will play less than twice. Of the remaining games, 6 will be against league opponents. That’s a possible 12 points up for grabs for a Millersville hockey club that is looking at a more difficult attempt at a playoff berth than years past.
The Playoff Situation
With the CSCHC expanding to 10 teams in the offseason, the playoff format has changed. Only 6 teams will get in, with the top 2 seeded clubs getting a first round bye. The #3 will play #6 and the #4 will go against the #5 ranked team in the opening round. Millersville is currently seated 4th with 14 points, which is tied with the 5th ranked team, Monmouth (Millersville has two games fewer played, therefore they are seated higher.) While that doesn’t sound terrible, what is concerning is that the 6th & 7th placed teams are tied with 13 points (TCNJ & Scranton). The Marauders already finished their season series with Monmouth and Scranton and they have one home game left against TCNJ, so look for that game to be huge in terms of standings. It’s also important to note that the only team Millersville hasn’t completed a league game with yet this season is the U-Penn Quakers, who are currently seated 2nd, as they have had one of their best seasons in years thus far. As good as the Quakers are, the Princeton Tigers have been playing on a whole level above the other teams, as they are separated by 7 points with the 2nd place Quakers, sitting atop the league standings with 25 points. NJIT has 10 points at the 8th seed with 13 games played, so they aren’t out of it yet, while West Chester sits at 9th with 8 points, and Seton Hall (who have already been mathematically eliminated from playoff contention) are last with 3 points.
Down The Stretch
When the calendar turns to 2017 and hockey returns to Millersville, the black & gold will have to find a way to be consistent. There longest winning streak of the season has been 3, set in the beginning of November. Since then, MU has won just one of their last 5 games, all of which were against league opponents. They will start out January with a non-league game against Georgetown, followed by finishing the month with 3 straight league matchups. Following that in the first weekend of February, Millersville will play 3 games in 3 nights (Friday-Sunday). 2 of those games are non-league, with TCNJ being the only league opponent sandwiched in between the other games that weekend.
Staying Positive    Perhaps it is appropriate that the semester break came at this time. With Millersville not playing their best hockey as of late, it might be the right time to step away from the game for a few weeks. Surely, many of the players will be getting on the ice in some form over the winter break, but maybe getting on for pick-up games or other forms of recreational hockey is what they need. It’s a competitive sport, but coaches will always say one of the most important things to do out there is have fun. The Marauders have to get back to that. It also helps to look at the positives. Freshman have contributed across the board in the successes this team has had so far, including Chris King and Bobby Tibbs, who are among the top 3 in scoring on the club. Lastly, regardless of the point margin, the Marauders are still in playoff position. They control their destiny when the spring semester begins and they will have to treat every game like a must win game if they want to be on the ice at Hobey Baker come February 17th. But for now, happy holidays everyone and we hope to see you in January!

Burgard Steps Down, Duffey Takes Over, Shirk Joins Staff

-Matt Iehle (November 2016)
Brent Burgard has spent four years as part of the Millersville coaching staff; one year as an Assistant Coach and the past three years as the Head Coach. In recent news, Coach Burgard has received a promotion with his company, Manheim Auctions, and will be taking over as Assistant General Manager in their location in Atlanta, Georgia. Coach Burgard's move has made him make a tough decision and step down as Head Coach of the Millersville Ice Hockey club. Over the past four years, Coach Burgard has been selected to the GNCHC All-Star coaching staff once and the CSCHC All-Star coaching staff twice. He also was a part of the CSCHC all-star challenge coaching staff at the 2015 ACHA All-Star Challenge. Coach Burgard will be missed by all the players and coaches and he will always be a part of the Ville Hockey family.
Millersville Ice Hockey club announced that Assistant Coach Travis Duffey will take over the Head Coaching role effective immediately. This is Coach Duffey's second year with the team and he is a 2014 graduate from Millersville University. Coach Duffey has played locally for the Lancaster Firebirds and the Hershey Jr. Bears and also has junior hockey experience with clubs such as the Central Penn Panthers (Jr. B), Walpole Express (Jr. A) and Laconia Leafs (Jr. A). He also played 3 semesters with the Millersville Ice Hockey club. Coach Duffey hopes to take his playing experience and hockey mind to lead Millersville throughout the rest of the season.
In addition to the appointing of Coach Duffey, Millersville Ice Hockey club has hired 2014 Millersville graduate Joey Shirk as new assistant coach. Coach Shirk spent 4 years playing with the Millersville Ice Hockey club. He also currently coaches the Lancaster Firebirds Bantam AA team in the DVHL. Coach Shirk hopes to make an immediate impact and help out the team in anyway he can.

Treated by Monmouth; Tricked by Seton Hall

-Andrew Mossbrooks (October 2016)
For the first time this season, Millersville hosted back-to-back home games on a weekend at the LIR. The Marauders were hoping they’d leave Halloween weekend with four points in the bag, but an unexpected event left them half satisfied, as two points slipped out of their hands against the Seton Hall Pirates, who earned their first victory of the season after limping out of the starting gates at 0-8. It was a big win for SHU, but a crushing defeat for Millersville.
The weekend started Friday with a late night home game against the Monmouth Hawks. Despite Monmouth being the ones with the long travel to the rink, it was Millersville who seemed jet lagged at the start, as they surrendered two opening period goals from the Hawks’ Mike Termine. Termine’s goals came by way of being parked in the slot and his second came via a cross crease pass. What looked to be a rocky start would ultimately fuel the fire for the black and gold to comeback, as they erased the deficit heading into the third period tied up at two. Then, MU would open the floodgates, scoring three additional goals in the first 11 minutes of the final frame in regulation to take the W. It was a character building game for the Marauders, who faced adversity and emerged through it as the winners.
While Monmouth was a team that Millersville had a tough time defeating in years past, their following opponent was anything but. Over the last three seasons, Millersville has defeated Seton Hall in all five of their regular season meetings. Not only have they defeated the Pirates, but they have also had a pretty easy time doing it. In the last five regular season contests between these two teams, Millersville has outscored SHU by a whopping score of 42-8. Safe to say, most MU fans may not have been too worried about this one.
Millersville allowed the first goal of the contest to SHU’s leading scorer, Charlie Mule. Towards the latter stages of the period, Millersville would strike back by way of a Cyle Knopf goal. Knopf would score one more later in the game. He has had terrific numbers against the Pirates in his ACHA career. #14 leads Millersville I points with 12 on this season. Unfortunately, that would not be enough. Both teams exchanged goals back and forth until Millersville was unable to find the answer on a bounce that went the Pirates way, allowing Seton Hall to skate away with a 4-3 victory. Millersville’s effort was not for the faint of heart, as they outshot their opposition 44-17, but Austin Francois would turn out to be the game changer in this game as he stood on his head against the Marauders relentless attack. The loss puts MU at 3-2 in league action thus far this season.
Coming up…
The Marauders play another set of games this coming weekend, as they kick off the month of November by returning to non-league action with a match up against the Georgetown Hoyas Friday night at Laurel Ice Gardens. The following evening they will travel back home to conclude their regular season series with the new CSCHC team, the Scranton Royals. Scranton beat Millersville a few weeks back on a late third period goal, so MU will be looking to even the score. Don’t forget to catch the action live, or follow the coverage on Ustream!

Game Recap: Millersville vs. West Chester 10/21/16

- Mike Wisienski (October 2016)

The Marauders hosted the Golden Rams for their homecoming game this past Friday. In a very fan filled Lancaster Ice Rink the two teams faced off for the first of two meetings this season. The Marauders took an early lead with two goals in the first scored by Chris King and Bobby Tibbs. Throughout the second period the Marauders were relentless on the Golden Rams net minder Mike Amoroso as James McNally (increases his point streak to 3 games) and Ethan Waddell found the back of the net and increased the Marauders lead to 4-0 going into the third period. Nick Capasso scored on an empty net goal in the closing moments of the game making that his third point on the night. Not only giving Millersville a 5-0 victory over West Chester but also giving Marc Daouphars his first shutout on the season.

2 Down, 16 to Go

-Andrew Mossbrooks (October 2016)

The Marauders kicked off their 3rd CSCHC season with 2 back-to-back league games on the road against Seton Hall & Scranton. Their hope: to win both games and get 4 points in the standings. The result: they ended up with 2.
Millersville beat Seton Hall 8-3, but failed to seal up a win late against Scranton (more on that in a bit). Regarding Seton Hall, Millersville continued their dominance over them. They are 5-0 against the Pirates in CSCHC regular season games. The Pirates would get to within 2 goals of Millersville in the 3rd, before Rob Weinberger sealed their fate with a one timer past Austin Francois to re-establish a 3 goal lead that would eventually turn into 5 before the final buzzer sounded. Millersville did score 2 shorthanded goals in the game from both Nick Capasso and James McNally, who scored later in the game as well. Ultimately, it was the same old song and dance between MU & SHU.
The more interesting game came the following night, when Ville traveled to play the Scranton Royals, who are one of the 2 newly added teams to the CSCHC.
Millersville opened the scoring early with Cyle Knopf banging one home to get his 3rd point over the weekend. MU controlled the pace throughout the 1st, rarely allowing Scranton’s offense to enter the zone. When the second began, something had changed. Given that the Marauders played on the road less than 20 hours prior, fatigue began to settle in. Scranton would score 2 in the middle period to take a lead into the 3rd. Then, in a 3rd period that had a playoff like atmosphere, both teams battled back and forth and exchanged leads before #26 Mike Vaynshteyn would seal the deal with the go ahead goal with under 3 minutes left to play. That goal would prove to be too much for Millersville, who lost by a score of 4-3.
Loose Pucks
McNally missed the Scranton game. Just past the 5 minute mark of the 1st, Ben Flocken went down with an injury to his right ankle and did not return. The length of the injury is uncertain, but the black & gold hope it’s nothing serious, as Flocken plays top line minutes on the blue line and is a huge part of the core. Roughly an hour prior to the start of Saturday’s game, Daouphars felt some stiffness in his knee that had apparently bothered him for some time. Pelkowski made just his 2nd start of the season, but played fairly well given his lack of time in net and time to prepare for what was a spot start.
Coming up…
Millersville University will celebrate its homecoming weekend October 21-23. On 10/21, Millersville hockey returns to Lancaster Ice Rink, where they will play the rest of their games in October. It starts with the homecoming pink out game against the West Chester Golden Rams. The last time these teams met was in last year’s playoffs, where Millersville eliminated WCU in the opening round at their own rink. Game time is set for 7p.m. and can be seen at the LIR or you can follow along with live coverage on Ustream.

And So It Begins: A look ahead to the start of CSCHC action for the Marauders

-Andrew Mossbrooks (October 2016)
The Marauders began their season on September 10th and yet they still have not seen league action. That finally changes on October 14th, when Millersville travels to New Jersey to begin their CSCHC season with the first of two league games on back to back nights. Both games will be on the road as we take a closer look at both teams the Marauders face off with in just a few short days.
A tale of 2 teams
Over the weekend, the Marauders will face 2 different teams heading in opposite directions. The first of which will be Friday night against the winless Seton Hall Pirates. Afterwards, they travel to Scranton, Pa. to faceoff with the 5-1 Scranton Royals, who are on of 2 new teams to the CSCHC. The Royals and Pirates have faced off against each other in both of their scheduled league games already this season,  with the Royals skating away victorious both times by a combined score of 15-5. Overall, Seton Hall is 0-4 on their season, with only one of those 4 losses coming via non-league action. To add insult to injury, that loss was against a D3 Ramapo College squad. Given the Marauders are 1-5 so far this year with all of their games being non-league, this is just the kind of team Millersville should want to kick off their league game schedule against.
Scouting the Pirates
Both Millersville & Seton Hall have had trouble putting pucks in the back of the net early on. Millersville has 14 goals through 6 games, while the Pirates have 10 in 4 games played. 5 of those 10 goals have come off the stick of Charlie Mule, who leads the team in goals and points (6). Mule is one of many familiar faces from the Pirates squad, who are composed of a majority of returning players from last season. Guys like Defenseman Bryan Nagy, Beuk Forrest and PJ Carfagno are still core pieces on this team, and even though they haven’t done too much early on, they’ll come around. The Marauders just have to hope it’s not against them. Millersville will also be looking for their 1st road win of the season over the weekend. They have played very well the last few years against Seton Hall, specifically at Richard Codey Arena. The last 2 seasons Millersville played Seton Hall on the road, they one last year 6-1 and the previous year 11-1. Cyle Knopf has combined for 7 points in those two games, including a hat trick in their 11-1 win 2 seasons ago. Last year’s 6-1 Millersville win featured 2 alumni goaltenders for both squads, so this year’s game will feature 2 different goaltenders between the pipes. Seton Hall Sophomore Austin Francois has started all of their games so far this season, including one weekend set of back to backs, so despite having a game against the reigning CSCHC champion Princeton Tigers the following night, it’s still likely he’ll get the nod for Friday evening’s game against Millersville.
Scouting the Royals
Well they’ve certainly lived up to their name. At 5-1 on the season, the Scranton Royals are poised to make an immediate impact in their 1st season in the CSCHC. The Marauders will have to keep their focus Friday against the Pirates, but when squaring up their two opponents for this weekend, it seems almost certain that their tougher of the two contests will come Saturday. Scranton’s only loss of the season came against Princeton. Since then, they’ve won 3 straight and with no game on Friday for the Royals, look for them to be 100% for Saturday’s game. Millersville will have to have fresh legs and be well rested for Saturday’s game. Unfortunately for the Marauders, their game against Seton Hall is the night before at 9:45pm. They’ll have less than 24 hours before their game against Scranton, so fatigue could become a factor. Scranton is also 4-0 this year at the Revolution Ice Center. Through 6 games, the Marauders have 2 players tied with the team lead in points with 5. Scranton’s top scorer, Ross Kleinschmidt has 16 points in 6 games. 11 of those are goals. Scary stuff. Including him, the Royals have 8 players with more than 5 points this year, so the black & gold will have to play strong defense and protect the slot because Scranton has the ability to put one up on the scoreboard at any given moment.
Things to consider
Despite Millersville going 1-5 thus far, they have played non-league games only. 3 of those 6 games came against teams who were nationally ranked last season, so there’s a silver lining to their record. The Marauders also have done some damage through the first 2 years of the CSCHC. They finished 3rd overall last year and won the division title in the inaugural 2014-15 season. They will play both Scranton and Seton Hall again this year at LIR. Both rematches come up shortly after this weekend’s games, with the home game against Seton Hall on the 29th of this month and the Scranton game that following weekend.
Don’t forget that puck drop is set for 9:45p.m. Friday & 4p.m. Saturday. With both games being on the road, feel free to tune into Ustream for full live coverage of both games.

Game Preview: Millersville vs Army 10/7/16

-Mike Wisienski (October 2016)

By the numbers:
This will be the first and only meeting between Millersville and Army. Millersville’s record is not what they would like it to be at 1-4. But they have faced off against very talented teams. On the other side Army has gotten off to a great start on their season coming into tomorrow’s game with a record of 4-0. Millersville has let in 25 goals so far this season, and they have only scored 13 goals. Millersville is going to need another spectacular game from whoever is in net. Not only will Millersville be relying on a great net minder but also from their veterans. Josh Feehan and James McNally are tied for point’s leader with five. They will be looked upon a lot throughout the game to produce goals and try to get another win. Army has only let in 16 goals in four games. What is even more impressive is that they have scored 26 goals. The last time these two teams met was the first two games of the 2015-2016 season for the Marauders. They ended up splitting the games 1-1. Army won the first won 5-2. Then the next game Millersville won 5-4. These two teams will sure bring every ounce of physicality to the rink and leave it all out there on the ice from start to finish.
Last week:
It was a very up and down weekend for the Marauders last week. On Friday September 30th they traveled to Rowan only to lose 8-1. Not even twenty four hours later Millersville had to play another strong nonleague game against Virginia Tech. They played at the top of their level going toe to toe against a highly ranked Virginia Tech team and won 6-4. They were able to boost their confidence and start October out the right way with their first win.
Focusing Points: Positioning & Discipline
If the Marauders can focus on these two key factors during tomorrow’s game then they have a great chance at winning it. Throughout the past few games the Marauders have been letting to many offensive players get past them which leads to the opposition scoring. The defense needs to buckle down and make sure they cover a man. So they do not over commit and allow the opposition to get a breakaway. That is how the Marauders were able to beat VT because they always kept the puck in VT’s zone. As far as discipline goes the Marauders have been penalized for a total of 91mins in just five games. If the Marauders can focus on the keeping their discipline up and not taking any penalties then they can really make this game interesting and hopefully come away with their second win on the season.

MU hangs on to beat V-Tech, Earns 1st win of the season

-Andrew Mossbrooks (October 2016)

The Marauders exorcized their demons on the 1st of October to get their 1st win of the season by defeating last year’s #10 ranked team in the South-East region, the Virginia Tech Hokies, by a final score of 6-4.
VT stormed back from a 5 goal deficit in the last period to get to within 2, but the MU defense and Marc Daouphars were able to hold on. Daouphars finished the evening with 50 saves on 54 shots (the most shots against Millersville in a game this season). Cyle Knopf also scored his first 2 goals of the season, along with a number of other Marauders who helped give #31 a cushion in net. Tanner Jones was pulled for V-Tech early in the 2nd after Millersville put up 4 goals on 20 shots. Christian Ciraco finished out the game in net for the Hokies.
While this was another non-league game for Millersville, this felt like a must win situation. Following a blowout loss to the Rowan Profs the previous night, they fell to 0-4 on the season, marking their worst start to a season under head coach Brent Burgard. Before the bus left New Jersey, coach had a message for his troops. There were going to be some line changes and things needed to change. One thing that left a lasting impression on the players was both coach Burgard and Club President, Matt Iehle telling everybody on the bus that they were going to win the next one. While the bus ride home was quiet, it felt like the message had gotten through. The players held themselves accountable and realized they were better than what they had been showing. Less than 24 hours later, they put that message into motion.
Millersville’s 6 goals against Virginia Tech fell one short of their cumulative goal total of 7 through the first 4 games. It was a playoff like atmosphere at Lancaster Ice Rink, as the Marauders played a physical brand of hockey, while also being able to keep pressure on the Hokies and create grade A scoring chances that led to pucks in the back of the net. It was a feel good moment for the guys and they will hope that their momentum from the win will continue into the rest of this month, where they will play 4 of their remaining 6 games in October at home. October will also mark the beginning of the 3rd CSCHC season. Millersville’s first league game will be on the road at Seton Hall, where they have been very successful at the Richard Codey Arena. Prior to Saturday’s game, the V-Tech Hokies actually beat a league rival of Millersville, the West Chester Golden Rams by a score of 7-2. Millersville plays West Chester on 10/21.
Coming up next..
The Millersville Marauders host Army on Friday, October 7th @8:45pm. This will also be the Marauder’s Military Night event for this season so make sure you catch the game live, or follow along at home with full game coverage on Ustream!

Quick Hits: Millersville @ Maryland 9/23

-Andrew Mossbrooks (September 2016)

Quick Hits: Millersville @ Maryland Terps, 9/23/16 8pm @ Laurel Ice Gardens
After falling to 0-2 on the season, the Marauders take their ship on the road in search for their first win of the 2016-17 campaign, as their month long non-league games continue against the Maryland Terps. Here’s what you need to know about this exciting non-league matchup before the puck drops:
By the numbers
This will be the first and only meeting of the season between these hockey clubs. The last meeting in Maryland they had was November 21st, 2014, when the Terps stopped a complete comeback by the Marauders with an overtime win. MU lost that game 4-3 and only one of their players who scored that night is still with Millersville (Troy Potts). Overall, there are 10 players who played that night for Millersville that are on this season’s roster. One of those players is Marc Daouphars, who started that night and finished the game with 52 saves. Daouphars was opposed by Sean Rankin of Maryland. Both goalies are still part of their respective teams. Daouphars is 12-14-2 in his ACHA career, while Rankin is 10-4-1 with 18 games played. Last year when these teams played at Lancaster Ice Rink, Maryland won 5-2 on Halloween night. Daouphars was also in net for that game, while Tanner Macphee was between the pipes for Maryland. In that game, Millersville was still outshot, but closed the margin by a 34-21 shot total, compared to the 20plus shot differential the year prior.
Last week
Both Millersville and Maryland were in action once last week. The Maryland Terps kicked off their season with a 4-2 win over the University of Virginia, while the Marauders fell to the Delaware Blue Hens. Both Zach Arden of Maryland and Millersville senior Josh Feehan scored twice in their games. Feehan has 3 goals on this young season. He set a career high with 8 markers in 28 contests last season. As the team’s first line center, #5 in gold has created numerous quality chances for his team and has 3 of the teams 5 goals on the year. That is a positive. On the negative side, MU has 10 goals against, with 3 of them coming on the penalty kill. They allowed Delaware’s Nathan Marks to score a powerplay goal on his way to a natural hat trick and were struck twice with PP goals from the opposition against Montclair the week prior.
Focusing points: Discipline & #21
With 3 of their 10 goals against coming while being shorthanded, it’s clear that Millersville will be looking to keep things 5-on-5 or at least have 5 guys on their side of the faceoff circle. Last year, Maryland scored 67 goals in 21 games. 49 of those came while on their home ice, posting a 3.5 average of goals per game while at home. Millersville averaged 3.6 goals per game on the road last season. If they can stay out of the box, this game could be the big win the guys in gold need to turn things around. Another point of focus will be number #21, Avery Clair. The Glastonbury, CT. native scored 29 points last season to lead the team in scoring. While he wasn’t on the scoreboard in Maryland’s season opener, he’s averaged over a point per game pace throughout his ACHA career, with 54 pts. In 42 games. 34 of those points are goals. The defense will have to zone in on Clair to limit his chances. Also, if the Marauders are to go on the penalty kill during this game, you can expect to see #21 in red on the ice.

Stay tuned to twitter for updates and news regarding Friday’s matchup and don’t forget to check out Ustream for full audio coverage of the Marauder’s first road game of the season!

Game Recap: Millersville vs. Delaware 9/16

-Mike Wisienski (September 2016)

On September 16th, 2016 Millersville hosted Delaware for what was a great game from start to finish. With all the new changes to the roster Millersville now had a new outlook on the future and for games against non-league opponents. In the beginning the Marauders looked very hot especially against a team they have struggled with in the past. Josh Feehan was able to increase his goal streak to two games by scoring. The Blue Hens had remarkable talent coming from #9 Nathan Marks who was the lone goal scorer in the first for the Blue Hens. But that would not be the last the Marauders saw of him. After the first period every fan was left on the edge of their seat wondering who will come back in the second poised to take the lead as it was tied 1-1. Throughout the second period the Marauders fought hard but the Blue Hens did a better job of maintaining possession of the puck in the Marauders zone. The goaltender for the Marauders was Jeff Pelkowski. He was making his first start for the Marauders in two years. The first period was very rewarding for Jeff. He saw a lot of shots and only let one get passed him. Unfortunately for Jeff about six minutes into the second period he had let two goals go past him both by Nathan Marks within the span of eight seconds giving him a hat trick in just a period and a half. Jeff was pulled after letting in the third goal with just under fourteen minutes left in the second period. He saw twenty five shots and saved twenty two. Marc Daouphars replaced him and finished the rest of the game. At the start of the third period the Marauders had to start the tone early since they were down by two and the Blue Hens had all the momentum going their way. Josh Feehan finds the back of the net for his second on the night giving him three goals in just two games. Shortly after, Chris King gets his first goal as a Marauder as he helps them tie the game 3-3. The Blue Hens later answer to take the lead again thanks to Stephen Bryson making it a 4-3 hockey game. With just minutes left the Marauders call a timeout in hopes to draw up a play that would enable them to tie the game back up. This would lead to Marc getting pulled with just over a minute left in the game. During the man advantage the Marauders had good shots on net and really tested the Blue Hens net minder. Adam Richards from Delaware finds the puck on his stick and shoots it into the empty net sealing the deal for Delaware giving them a 5-3 victory over Millersville. One thing is for sure is that the Marauders competed at a new level with Delaware and the next matchup between these two teams in February will be one not to miss.

Previewing the Marauders 2016-2017 Season

-Andrew Mossbrooks (September 2016)

As the summer begins to wind down, thousands of students are preparing themselves for the inevitable return to Millersville, where they will continue their studies that they hope leads them to their future career. While many students will be hitting the books night after night, a select few will also be hitting the ice multiple times a week, as well as the gym, while balancing everything else on their shoulders in the hopes that they will be rewarded with some hardware at the end of February. Those select few are the players who represent the D2 Millersville Ice Hockey team and in the 3rd season of the CSCHC, they will be looking for their first league championship. We are just a few weeks away from the beginning of another 29 game grinding schedule that will task the Marauders with attempting to clinch a playoff berth, which from there would require them to win 3 games in as many days to secure their first CSCHC championship. With that being said, let’s take a look at what to anticipate for the Marauders this season:
1) Last season, MU finished the regular season with an overall record of 13-14-1-1 (including non-league games). This number was slightly down from their previous season, which saw them finish at 17-11-1-2, earning the regular season division title for that year. This year Millersville will look to get back to form with a few new faces and attempt to reclaim that regular season title.
2) This year will be the most challenging yet in the CSCHC for the men in gold. The CSCHC has expanded once again, now featuring the newest additions of both Scranton and Rutgers to the mix. The CSCHC an impactful and vital part of the ACHA during its short run, however this will require Millersville to push even more now as playoff spots become harder to acquire. Each team within the league will have 2 games against the Marauders with one being played at each team’s home rink. The remaining 11 games for Millersville will be played against non-league opponents.
3) When it comes to non-league games, just about any player that suits up for MU at the Lancaster Ice Rink will tell you they are just as important as a league game. Former club president and net minder Eric Hench wanted this team to get nationally ranked and while that has not happened just yet, this team has made strides of progress. The story will be the same this year, as Millersville will try to not only regain their divisional title from 2 seasons ago, but also look to grab a few more W’s in the non-league column, hoping it will gain the university its first nationally ranked ice hockey team.
4) Another interesting topic that will be worth keeping an eye on as this season long campaign begins will be the new crop of leadership roles that have been given out on this squad. While a new president was announced late last season as junior classman Matt Iehle will lead the helm, it remains to be seen how the Marauders will perform without the guidance of Eric Hench. Leaving with Hench were veterans such as Andrew Quintos and Sean Walsh, along with others who played an integral role on this team’s success over the last several years. While these players might feel irreplaceable, their shoes will have to be filled by players still on this team. Leadership is key for winning championships at any level of hockey, including the professional tier. The Marauders will need to establish that early on in the season to help their chances.
5) Many questions require answers for the Marauders hockey club. Those answers will begin to show on Saturday, September 10th, when the Marauders will hoist the colors and begin another season. A hockey season is filled with guarantees. It promises wins and losses. It will feel both mentally and physically painful at times. It will have its highs and carry the burden of its lows. What this coming hockey season does not guarantee however, is a championship for the Millersville Marauders. 9 other teams will pursue the coveted CSCHC championship, including the defending champions known as the Princeton Tigers. The name Marauders has yet to be featured on the CSCHC’s championship plaque. This year they look to rectify that. See you in September.

CSCHC Adds Two More Teams

   -Matt Iehle (March 2016)

This offseason, the Colonial States Collegiate Hockey Conference has expanded for the second year
in a row. The two year old league has let two new teams in, Scranton University and Rutgers University.
Both teams come from the GNCHC and both finished in first and second place respectively. Rutgers
finished 16-0-0 in the GNCHC winning the title over Scranton by a score of 3-2 in the championship
game. The addition of the two universities will bring the CSCHC up to 10 teams. Every team will still
play each other twice and the playoff format will stay the same.
